Canadian Meat Council Welcomes Renewed Engagement with China
Ottawa, ON– The Canadian Meat Council (CMC) welcomes the Government of Canada’s renewed approach to international engagement. In an increasingly uncertain global environment, CMC supports efforts to recalibrate key relationships to strengthen Canada’s economic resilience through diversified trade and strategic investment, grounded in economic realism and commercial common sense.
CMC applauds the Government of Canada on the reinstatement of access for Canadian beef to the Chinese market — an important and hard-earned milestone for producers and processors across the country. The Council looks forward to learning more details in the coming days and to collaborating closely with officials and industry partners to ensure a smooth resumption of trade flows.
At the same time, CMC emphasizes the importance of continued dialogue toward the full normalization of red meat trade with China, including the removal of remaining tariffs on Canadian pork. The sector is optimistic that renewed engagement will help pave the way for resolution soon.
In 2021, Canada exported approximately $1.75 billion in red meat to China, underscoring the market’s strategic importance for Canadian producers and processors. With a growing middle-class and rising demand for high-quality protein, China remains a key priority for the sector. Reflecting this commitment, Canadian red meat exporters have established the Canadian Meat Advocacy Office (CMAO) in Beijing — a tangible, on-the-ground demonstration of the industry’s stated goal to build stronger advocacy and commercial relationships.
“The reinstatement of beef access is a very positive development and a welcome sign of renewed cooperation,” said Russ Mallard, Chair of the Canadian Meat Council. “We commend the Government of Canada for this achievement and look forward to continued collaboration to achieve full market normalization for both beef and pork.”
CMC encourages both governments to maintain momentum toward practical, measurable results on outstanding meat access issues. The organization remains in close contact with federal partners and looks forward to working with officials on next steps.
